Top 10 Most Downloaded Apps by Sensor Tower Report in December 2019

The popularity of Likee mobile app, a short video creation platform by Singapore based BIGO Technology, is growing by leaps and bound across the world. The Quarter 4 report by Sensor Tower on worldwide app downloads in December 2019 reveals that Likee is yet again among the top 10 most downloaded apps in overall mobile downloads. YouTube, Whatsapp, TikTok, SHAREit, Snapchat, Instagram, Likee and a few more apps are among the 10 most downloaded apps. Below are the highlights on the same-

1.      WhatsApp

WhatsApp remained on top this quarter, leading four Facebook-owned apps in the top five. WhatsApp experienced a huge growth of 39% Q/Q in 4Q19, after decreased downloads in the previous four quarters. WhatsApp Messenger is a freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service owned by Facebook, Inc. It allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other media.

2.      TikTok

Total Bytedance mobile app revenue in December 2019 was $30m, including $29m for iOS apps and $1m for Android apps. Total mobile app downloads for Bytedance was 121m, including 32m iOS app downloads and 89m Android app downloads.  Bytedance has a total of 143 apps, including 70 iOS apps, and 73 Android apps. Their top grossing app last month was and their most downloaded app was TikTok. TikTok downloads reached an all-time high in Q4 2019 with nearly 220 million installs. This represented a 24% increase over Q3 2019 and 6% growth Y/Y.

3.      Messenger

Facebook Messenger (commonly known as Messenger)[9] is a messaging app and platform developed by Facebook, Inc. Originally developed as Facebook Chat in 2008, the company revamped its messaging service in 2010, and subsequently released standalone iOS and Android apps in August 2011 and standalone Facebook Portal hardware for Messenger-based calling in Q4 2018. Over the years, Facebook has released new apps on a variety of different operating systems, launched a dedicated website interface (Messenger.com), and separated the messaging functionality from the main Facebook app, allowing users to use the web interface or download one of the standalone apps.

4.      Facebook

Facebook was founded in 2004, and headquartered in Menlo Park, USA. Total Facebook mobile app revenue in December 2019 was $4m, including $1m for iOS apps and $2m for Android apps. Total mobile app downloads for Facebook was 284m, including 46m iOS app downloads and 238m Android app downloads. Facebook has a total of 111 apps, including 54 iOS apps, and 57 Android apps. Their top grossing app last month was Facebook and their most downloaded app was WhatsApp Messenger.

 

5.      Instagram

After its launch in 2010, Instagram rapidly gained popularity, with one million registered users in two months, 10 million in a year, and 1 billion as of May 2019. In April 2012, Facebook acquired the service for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock. As of October 2015, over 40 billion photos had been uploaded to the service. Although praised for its influence, Instagram has been the subject of criticism, most notably for policy and interface changes, allegations of censorship, and illegal or improper content uploaded by users. As of January 2020, the most-followed person is footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with over 196 million followers, and the most-followed woman is singer Ariana Grande with over 170 million followers.

6.      Likee

Likee is a prominent global short video creation platform, with cutting-edge special effects video shooting and editing tools. Created by BIGO Technology Pte. Ltd, Likee was initially released in July 2017 and is now one of the world's most popular apps. Likee is aimed to make it easy for everyone to create amazing videos and record memorable moments.  According to the YY Reports Third Quarter 2019, the MAU of Likee exceeded 100.2 million, which increased by 413.4% year over year. The MAU of imo’s embedded Likee service reached 50.2 million.

7.      SHAREit

Total SHAREit Technologies mobile app revenue in December 2019 was < $5k, including < $5k for iOS apps and < $5k for Android apps. Total mobile app downloads for SHAREit Technologies was 29m, including 1m iOS app downloads and 28m Android app downloads. SHAREit Technologies has a total of 14 apps, including 10 iOS apps, and 4 Android apps. Their top grossing app last month was SHAREit Pro and their most downloaded app was SHAREit - Transfer.

 

8.      YouTube

YouTube is an American video-sharing platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. As of February 2017, there were more than 400 hours of content uploaded to YouTube each minute and one billion hours of content being watched on YouTube every day. As of August 2018, the website is ranked as the second-most popular site in the world, according to Alexa Internet, just behind Google. As of May 2019, more than 500 hours of video content are uploaded to YouTube every minute.

 

9.      Snapchat

Snapchat has become known for representing a new, mobile-first direction for social media, and places significant emphasis on users interacting with virtual stickers and augmented reality objects. As of October 2019, Snapchat has 210 million daily active users. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients. The app has evolved from originally focusing on person-to-person photo sharing.

10.  Netflix

Netflix was founded in 1997, and headquartered in Los Gatos, USA. Total Netflix mobile app revenue in December 2019 was $37m, including $36m for iOS apps and $600k for Android apps. Total mobile app downloads for Netflix was 22m, including 8m iOS app downloads and 13m Android app downloads. Netflix has a total of 16 apps, including 7 iOS apps, and 9 Android apps. Their top grossing app last month was Netflix and their most downloaded app was Netflix.
